Ruby LipDub – The Making Of!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

As some of you remember a while ago our super-talented Ruby on Rails Team made a Ruby LipDub. We had loads of fun while shooting it and have a ton of behind-the-scenes material. Now, it’s the time to share it.

Ladies and Gents, that’s how the Applicake LipDub was made! Enjoy!

Or at least that’s what Matz said at EuRuKo last month… Yes, he did mean “brave” but changing “r” to “l” in words, excuse me,  wolds already became an inside joke for many EuRuKo attendees. Here’s the link to Matz keynote in case you missed it.

Moving office doesn’t necessarily have to be a pain. In fact – it can be loads of fun.
All you need is a free weekend, a camera, Ruby on Rails developers and beer ;-)

Watch the video from Applicake new HQ!

We’d like to wish ourselves…

Well, it’s been a while since we shot it (Applicake turned three in November 2009) but… here it is –  a funny movie we made at Applicake’s birthday party!

‘Agata dancing’ OR ‘Our secret ingredient is the FUN FACTOR’

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Agata is a Project Manager at Applicake. She’s a Ruby on Rails developer too. And an avid skier. But there’s more, something we did not know about her. AGATA is a D-A-N-C-E-R ! Check out Agata’s latest video from her time off in Italy! (she’s the one in the front ;-) .

UPDATE: My (Ela’s) conversation with a prospect over Skype:
him: ok, i saw your ski video, you are weird people. Zappos core value nr 3.
me: ; -) I told ya
me: think outside the box, right?
him: right, even if that was waaaay outside
me: ; -)

Funny t-shirt I recently saw.

More women in IT, please!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Even though the position of women in IT is strengthening every day, the industry still remains dominated by men. Luckily for us –  women, there are some strong ladies climbing up the career ladder and setting up new standards.

mayer

The story of Marissa Mayer in latest Vogue, is a good example of an  extraordinary woman in an environment actually dominated by men. As described in the magazine “the 34-year-old megamillionaire, Oscar de la Renta– obsessed, computer-programming Google executive who lives in a penthouse atop the Four Seasons, San Francisco (…) demolishes old-fashioned oppositions of beauty and brains, or women and science, or chic and geek”.

Marissa – an internet guru and Google executive, is the Vice President of Search Product and User Experience at Google. She is responsible for the creation of such product as: Gmail, Google Maps, iGoogle, Google Chrome, Google Health, and Google News. She graduated with honors from Stanford University and was the first woman to be hired in, a company with silly name, Google. Additionaly, Fortune magazine lists her as one of the 50 most powerful women in the world.
Marissa is not yet in her mid thirties but what she accomplished is extremely impressive and inspiring to women all over the world.

Among her, other ladies conquered the industry – Carleton Fiorin- served as chief executive officer at H&P, Esther Dyson- was the first interim chairperson of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Grace Hopper-pioneer in the IT field , Margaret “Meg” Whitman- former President and Chief Executive Officer of Ebay. Research has proved women are statistically less susceptible to stress, more efficient and rather stay calm in difficult situations.
I guess those abilities help us in coping with everyday’s work activities, especially on executive positions.
Power belongs (also) to us – ladies – just be strong and brave enough to reach for it!
